Henry K. Burgwyn [Front & Center], William H. Bray, Emmett M. Morrison, William A. Smith, Richard L. Williams. All were VMI, 1860, & drillmasters at Camp Lee, in Richmond,Virginia, April, 1861. They are wearing their "furlough" blue frock coats, with the high dome VMI buttons. These buttons were NOT used on their "everyday" shell jackets worn at the Institute. Burgwyn was killed at Gettysburg on the first day, while commanding the 26th North Carolina. Morrison was severely wounded at Antietam, Sept., 1862, while a Captain in the 15th Virginia Infantry, and captured as its Lieutenant Colonel at Sayler's Creek at the end of the war. |
